In 2015, Kassing Lung created a fairy world in three picture books inspired by Nordic mythology and populated it with magical characters – both good and evil, called Monsters. The most notable among them was LABUBU – a small monster with tall, pointed ears and jagged teeth. Despite his mischievous appearance, LABUBU is kind-hearted and always wants to help, but often accidentally achieves the opposite.
Labubu is a brand of collectible plush monster elves created by Hong Kong designer Kassing Lung and marketed and sold exclusively by China-based retailer Pop Mart. Labubu is also the name of the main character in the series.
Labubu was originally a character created by Kassing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist who grew up in the Netherlands. Labubu was part of Lung’s “Monsters” series of stories, influenced by the Nordic folklore and mythology he enjoyed as a child.
Labubu was first introduced in 2015 with the “Monsters” figures produced by How2Work. The toy gained wider recognition in 2019 after a collaboration with Pop Mart. This partnership contributed to Labubu’s popularity among collectors.
